New legislation signed in late January by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie mandates that building owners must notify local fire officials of roof-mounted solar panels.
The law stems from a massive fire last July at the Dietz & Watson distribution center, in which firefighters were encountered a roof almost covered with solar panels and were unable to fight the fire from above.
The Courier-Post notes that only one and two-family residences are exempt from the new law, which requires posting of an emblem on a building’s front entrance to signify the presence of roof top solar panels.
