IREC Welcomes Meghan Nutting as Vice President of Regulatory Reform
Nutting brings more than two decades of experience in clean energy policy, regulatory strategy, and market development, with deep expertise in distributed energy resources (DERs).
IREC is pleased to announce Meghan Nutting as the organization’s new Vice President of Regulatory Reform. Nutting brings more than two decades of experience in clean energy policy, regulatory strategy, and market development, with deep expertise in distributed energy resources (DERs). She will provide strategic direction and oversight of IREC’s Regulatory Program, which helps U.S. states and territories regulate their electric utilities so that DERs—like solar, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure—can rapidly and equitably power the transition to a 100% clean energy grid.

Nutting joins IREC from Sunnova Energy International, where she spent a decade leading government and regulatory affairs for one of the nation’s largest distributed solar and storage providers. As Executive Vice President, Government & Regulatory Affairs, she guided the company through pivotal policy milestones, including a $3 billion U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Programs Office guarantee, and helped drive the company’s expansion from a few thousand customers to nearly half a million. She also worked with DOE staff to develop and implement the Puerto Rico Resilience Fund, led petitions before the FTC and FERC challenging monopoly utility anti-competitive practices, and shaped the company’s strategy for virtual power plant and microgrid deployment.
Earlier in her career, Nutting served as Director, Policy & Electricity Markets at SolarCity, which later became part of Tesla, where she helped guide the company’s state regulatory and legislative strategy before and after its IPO, expanding access to rooftop solar and modernizing net metering policies across the country. She has also worked on Capitol Hill and in state government, including as Legislative Director for New York State Assembly member Linda Rosenthal and as Deputy Press Secretary for U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe.
Since 2014, Nutting has also served as Founder and Principal of Altitude Strategies Consulting, advising corporate, nonprofit, and public sector clients on energy, climate, and sustainability policy. She has served in numerous board and leadership roles across the clean energy sector, including on the Board of the Solar Energy Industries Association, the Puerto Rico Solar & Energy Storage Association, HData, GridFWD, Think Microgrid, InvestHER, and the Energy Choice Coalition, and Women in Solar Energy, which she co-founded. Her recognitions include the 2021 National C3E Business Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and being named among the Denver Business Journal’s Top Women in Business (2021) and Top Women in Energy (2018).
Nutting holds a Master’s in Public Affairs from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Society from Cornell University.
