Adding to its suite of renewable energy technologies for the San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order to all departments to fast-track more renewable energy projects; this time, it’s for small wind.
A newly-formed Wind Task Force proposed two resolutions after its first meeting, to expedite the permitting process by the City’s Department of Building Inspection and Planning Department, and to incorporate wind turbines into the design of existing and new City facilities whenever and wherever possible.
According to Johanna Partin, renewable-energy program manager for San Francisco, the city already has installed four pilot projects — a 2.5-kilowatt system at the Randall Museum in the Mission district and three far smaller turbines on two buildings in Bernal Heights and the Castro — within the last year. They are testing the wind at 27 sites to potentially develop more.
The City is testing a vertical-axis wind turbine on nearby Treasure Island, and is discussions with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to create a test-facility for rooftop-scale wind across San Francisco Bay.
