The California Public Utilities Commission issued the latest California Solar Initiative Staff Progress Report in April 2009, which shows California leading the nation with more than 500 MW of cumulative installed solar capacity.

Driven by the State’s solar rebate program, the California Solar Initiative, Californians installed 211 MW at over 15,000 different sites throughout investor -owned utility territories in California since 2007.

The first quarter of 2009 broke records for new solar installations, with more than 3,600 projects totaling 78 MW of new interconnected solar PV capacity. The first quarter also saw record demand for new solar applications. According the Staff Progress Report, the California Solar Initiative has spurred more than $2.8 billion worth of investment in solar projects by California consumers.

The California Solar Initiative is overseen by the California Public Utilities Commission and provides incentives for solar system installations to customers of the State’s three investor-owned utilities – Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric. The solar program is the product of Governor Schwarzenegger’s “Million Solar Roofs” vision for the State of California.
