Hawaiian Electric to let some solar PV customers connect to the grid
Hawaiian Electric Co. is now allowing more than 200 Oahu customers who already had solar photovoltaic contracts before it made changes to its interconnection policies to go ahead and connect to the grid, according to Sen. Mike Gabbard, chair, Senate Committee on Energy and Environment.
Hawaiian Electric Co. is now allowing more than 200 Oahu customers who already had solar photovoltaic contracts before it made changes to its interconnection policies to go ahead and connect to the grid, according to Sen. Mike Gabbard, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment.
Gabbard, who represents areas in West Oahu, led an informational briefing at the State Capitol in Honolulu on Monday discussing the recent changes to HECO’s solar PV grid interconnection policies.
But despite HECO’s gesture on Monday, he pointed out that Oahu is still faced with the huge problem of solar PV installations virtually at a standstill.
“This means the solar industry is laying off people during its busiest time of the year and homeowners and businesses can’t move forward with installing PV to lower their electricity costs,” Gabbard said in a statement. “I’ve asked HECO and the solar industry to report back to the Legislature by November 14 on the progress they’ve made in coming up with a solution.”
The briefing also included other committees such as the Energy and Environmental Protection, Consumer Protection and Commerce and Commerce and Consumer Protection.
