IREC’s net metering, small wind, and workforce development experts were in full attendance recently at the American Solar Energy Society’s 2009 Solar Conference in Buffalo, NY. It was a very full agenda; often the IREC team was presenting at the same time on different topics in different rooms.
That’s how it was on the first day. And the second day. And the third day.
Jane Weissman moderated the Wednesday, May 13th Workforce Development session where Jerry Ventre presented his and Jane Weissman’s paper on the results of a survey of industry needs and training approaches, while in another room across the hall, Larry Sherwood moderated and presented at the session on U.S. PV Markets, where North Carolina Solar Energy Center’s Justin Barnes spoke about policies leading the PV markets.
In the afternoon, Jason Keyes moderated Show Me the Money where a variety of financing strategies from Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to payback numbers on the new 30% federal tax credit, to PV costs on homeowners living in RPS states were presented.
Later that afternoon, IREC board member, NYSERDA program manager and conference chair, Vicki Colello, moderated the session on emerging solar applications and issues like solar electric vehichles, solar sustained vehicles and the salvage value of solar.
Thursday, May 14 was another day of simultaneous presentations for IREC. Jane Weissman gave opening remarks at the morning plenary, where solar industry leaders from NYSERDA, Conergy, AEE Solar and LIPA who gave their perspective on current and future market, technology and workforce trends.
NCSC’s Rusty Haynes moderated ‘Greening the Grid,’ where IREC’s legal and net metering eagle, Jason Keyes, discussed net metering and interconnetion best practices (IREC co-authors of that paper include Kevin Fox, Joseph Wiedman, Maureen Quinlan, Laurel Varnado, Keith McAllister and Rusty Haynes). NCSC’s Laurel Varnado’s spoke about community solar.
At the same time, IREC’s Jane Weissman was presenting on green jobs and setting credentialing standards for practitioners (NABCEP) and organizations (ISPQ).
That afternoon, Larry Sherwood moderated and presented at the Solar ABC’s panel where IREC’s Michael Sheehan’s paper on Utility External Disconnect Switch was presented, along with Colleen Kettles paper on solar access laws.
Larry Sherwood and Jerry Ventre were on the agenda for the final day of the conference discussing renewable energy product certification. Jerry moderated the session; Larry presented about the activities of the Small Wind Certification Council.
Kudos to IREC for another exemplary array of presentations on timely, relevant renewable energy issues. Well done.
