On Tuesday and Wednesday, August 26 – 27 from 6pm – 9pm EDT, IREC will present a two-day workshop to prepare individuals for the NABCEP Solar Thermal Certification Exam on September 13. This workshop is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Participants will become familiar with reference materials and will review the tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities typically required to install and maintain Solar Water and Pool Heating systems. This workshop is designed for experienced installers preparing for the NABCEP Exam. Others may take the course, but it is NOT a “beginner’s workshop.” Sign up now — the registration fee is discounted for registrations made by August 14, 2008.

The next NABCEP solar thermal exam will be September 13. In order to sit for the exam, you must meet specified requirements and submit an application by July 4. The certification exam will be based on the Solar Thermal Task Analysis, a comprehensive list of tasks and subtasks for contractors installing solar water and pool heating systems on buildings. The purpose of the Solar Thermal Task Analysis is to define a general set of competencies or skills typically required of practitioners who install and maintain solar water and pool heating systems. The Interstate Renewable Energy Council, Inc. does NOT administer the exam or offer certification.

If you have questions on certification or the exam, you should contact NABCEP at 518.899.8186. Registration for this training workshop does NOT include the exam. You must submit an application to NABCEP by July 4 in order to sit for the exam.

Workshop Instructor Bill Guiney has twenty-six years of experience in the solar water heating and energy efficiency industries. Currently, Bill is a Program Manager for Renewable Energy Solutions for Johnson Controls, Inc. He has been a licensed solar contractor in Florida, operated a successful distribution company, was the past president of AET manufacturing and General Manager of the Duke Solar/Solargenix Energy Water Heating Division. Bill has provided training programs around the world.

Mr. Guiney is a Certified Home Energy Rater and has been a leading instructor for solar thermal at the Florida and North Carolina Solar Energy Centers and serves on the NABCEP technical committee for solar thermal.
