The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to analyze Smart Grid opportunities in the State of Maryland.

As part of this grant, MEA is sponsoring two stakeholder meetings to discuss the elements of a Smart Grid that could potentially be used in Maryland as well as the costs and benefits of such a grid for all Marylanders.

The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Chesapeake College, located in Wye Mills, MD, in the Todd Performing Art Center. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the University of Maryland College Park in the Stamp Student Union Grand Ballroom Lounge. Both meetings will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The meetings are free, but registration is requested for planning purposes.

The purpose of these meetings is to bring together interested Smart Grid stakeholders to:

  • Provide an opportunity for the project team to share the Smart Grid Maryland project goals and objectives;
  • Discuss the elements that could be included in a Smart Grid including energy conservation and efficiency, metering technologies and other infrastructure products, data acquisition technologies and products, and power quality technologies; and
  • Discuss grid-related issues that need to be considered for Maryland, such as – but not limited to -business issues and opportunities, consumer preferences, economic impacts, ancillary services, demand response, use of renewable energy resources, grid reliability, and climate change.

These two meetings will also provide attendees with the opportunity to share their ideas about potential elements of a Smart Grid in Maryland.
