On August 28, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) staff issued its net metering and solar pilot program report, showing that the number of net metering customers in Michigan surpassed 1,000 for the first time in 2011.
“The year 2011 marked a watershed for net metering in Michigan,” noted MPSC Chairman John D. Quackenbush. “Not only did the number of net metering customers surpass 1,000 for the first time, but the capacity of net metering installations – some 6,166 kilowatts – increased by 118 percent over 2010. That means both the number of customers and the amount of electricity generated by these on-site renewable energy systems is increasing at an impressive rate.”
The report noted that the number of net metering customers increased from 628 in 2010 to 1,015 in 2011. The total size of the net metering program grew from 2,828 kilowatts (kW) in 2010 to 6,166 kW in 2011. Solar proved the most popular with 3,176 kW added in 2011; wind followed with 162 kW added in 2011.
Other firsts in the report include “Category 2” net metering customers (four) and one net metering customer of an alternative electric supplier (AES). Category 2 projects are those greater than 20 kilowatts and not more than 150kW.
