Groundbreaking for Wind Turbine at Osprey's Dominion Winery

With the help of the Long Island Power Association’s Backyard Wind Initiative rebate, Osprey’s Dominion will become the first vineyard on Long Island to produce wine using wind power. LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law, as well as State Assemblyman Marc Alessi and Gordian Raacke, Executive Director of Renewable Energy Long Island, participated in the groundbreaking event.  Osprey’s Dominion was the first winery on Long Island to power their ground’s maintenance equipment with biodiesel fuels, and have been doing so since 1999.  Osprey’s Dominion plans to host a gala Ribbon Cutting event in the spring of 2010, and to release a limited edition “FLIGHT” wine, the first wine made with wind power.

Eastern Energy Systems will be installing a ReDriven 20 kW wind turbine at the site.  The turbine is expected to produce an estimated 42,802 kWh of electricity per year for an annual energy savings of $7,918.  The projected total cost of the project is $144,000.  LIPA will be providing a rebate of $69,401.  The turbine will be located in Peconic, New York.
