Using small grant funding from the NC Clean Energy Technology Center (formerly the NC Solar Center) to help community colleges establish or enhance its solar curriculum, the College of the Albemarle (COA) was able to equip the mobile PV training laboratory with tools to demonstrate solar power. Aside from using the mobile lab for classroom activities, the COA is able to take it on the road to showcase the power of the sun at several different events and locations.
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) in Madison, Wisconsin, and Solar Energy International (SEI), recently held an Advanced Solar Electric Academy for community college and high school instructors from across the United States and Guam at SEI’s training facility in Paonia, Colorado. The training was funded through MATC’s National Science Foundation grant. Eight of the 14 colleges are part of the Department of Energy’s Solar Instructor Training Network.
Instructor Keven Vachon is embracing the meaning of experiential education at Mid-Maine Technical Center, a technical high school in Waterville, Maine. Using knowledge he gained from training from Kennebec Valley Community College, a northeast Regional Training Provider in the Solar Instructor Training Network (SITN), Mr. Vachon taught his electrical technology students about solar by having them install a PV system on the school’s roof.
The Penn State University Northern Mid-Atlantic Solar Education and Resource Center (NMASERC) just completed offering the Immersive Leadership Experience Internship program in conjunction with the GridSTAR Center at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The 12-week program included a solar PV design and construction course component led by Matt Fedorko of PSU and Kevin Wright of UMC Solar.
If you find yourself traveling the highways of the Northeast this spring and summer, don’t be surprised if you see a brightly decorated silver van and trailer with logos and photographs advertising Kenebec Valley Community College’s (KVCC) renewable energy training program. The van and trailer are packed full of the equipment needed for solar PV hands-on training. The goal is to assist regional solar training by providing instructional support and training equipment where it is needed.
The Northern Mid-Atlantic RTP has produced two new video series, Solar Operations/Maintenance and Inspection of Solar Arrays. The videos were filmed on location in Milesburg, PA, and hosted by Kevin Wright, United Management Consultants, who also performed all of the actual electrical inspections of the array as it was being constructed.
Congratulations to Henry Red Cloud, a partnering instructor through the SITN, as he was awarded by President Obama as a Solar Champion on April 17 at a White House ceremony. Henry is part of the Rocky Mountain Region and participated in training through Solar Energy International in 2012.
At the recent SunShot Summit and Technology Forum, SITN’s Region 8 (California and Hawaii) team arranged for students to demonstrate a PV installation on a mock roof during the SunShot Solar Summit in Anaheim on May 20 and 21.
SUNY Canton’s CREST Receives IREC Training Program Accreditation; First Among HVCC Partner Organizations
SUNY Canton, a partner within the Northeast Region of the SITN, has become the first to become an IREC Accredited Training Provider for its solar thermal and PV programs . Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) is one of two northeast RTPs.
At the GridSTAR training facility at the Philadelphia Naval Yard, Delawre Tech/Terry students Josh Gorrell and Emily St. Clair, and Delaware Tech/Stanton students Gail Yborra and Fausto Arellano worked with solar experts Matt Fedorko, a Northern Mid-Atlantic solar education and resource center architectural engineering instructor from Penn State, and Jeremiah Jancik, an instructor of design and safe installation at Apollo Solar and Energy.
