Meet a Solar Ready Vets Fellow: Luke Medvegy
From 2019 through October 2025, IREC led the Solar Ready Vets Fellowship in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program. Offered at no cost, the fellowship matched solar industry employers with service members who are in transition from the military to the civilian workforce.
Luke Medvegy: AES
Luke Medvegy joined AES as a Hiring our Heroes Corporate Fellow in coordination with Solar Ready Vets in September 2023, where he now serves as the Manager at Global Supply Chain, Continuous Improvement & Business Intelligence.
Luke Medvegy retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years of service in the United States Army, where he served at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels. He led initiatives drafting strategy, leading crisis action teams, and leading ground combat operations. He believes his most valuable skills learned were teamwork, leadership, and building convergent and diverse teams to solve critical problems globally.
Luke has led teams at many levels, including as a diplomat serving overseas to help with soft power initiatives. Luke has led from the company commander level to vital staff roles supporting and leading initiatives to protect thousands of service members in austere environments.
Luke’s last role was serving as an Instructor at the Department of Sustainment and Forces Management at the US Army Command and General Staff College. This is where he taught sustainment (transportation, maintenance, ordnance, medical, human relations, and force management) operations, leadership, and U.S. and Chinese strategy coupled with military and joint decision making processes for field grade officers.
Luke’s steadfast goal while serving in the Army was to protect the nation, save soldiers’ lives, and help U.S. allies and partners. He now says he is continuing his mission to help people after retiring from the military. He believes in the power of renewable energy to help people’s ability around the world to keep the lights on and have Internet access for schooling and medical support. “At the end of the day, we’re helping families and with AES we are helping nations,” Medvegy says.
Luke now works at AES in the areas of communications, continuous improvement, market analysis, and business intelligence. He works with the VP of Global Supply Chain to support various portfolios such as renewables procurement and sourcing, governance, utilities, energy infrastructure, and strategy. Luke finds himself involved in various committees, growth initiatives, and process development.
In his time serving in the military, Luke gained experience in forward-thinking strategy, project management, and process improvement, and he is now able to apply these skills to AES. He advises that service members interested in working in the clean energy industry should not undervalue themselves, and should look for ways to continuously improve themselves and their organization. He shares that the industry is always changing so it is important to continuously do homework to keep learning new technologies, processes, and systems. Also, he says, “never be afraid to lead a project even if it means you make mistakes along the way, learn from them, and learn from others. It will make you and your organization better.”
